This marks my first time attending a mooncake review held at Zuan Yuan Chinese Restaurant, One World Hotel. Walking into the reserved VIP rooms, the first thing that caught my attention was the artfully displayed mooncake. The mooncake celebration falls on the 15th day of the eighth month on the lunar calendar and marks the arrival of autumn harvest. Seeing the mooncakes, reminds me of my family’s tradition in celebrating this occasion. It involves my entire family gathering at my mom’s place for dinner; followed by playing lanterns under the moon and savouring mooncake together.
Before, we begin our mooncake tasting, our kind host Zuan Yuan Restaurant has put together a special dinner showcase for us. We were lavished with selections such as Double Boiled Fish Maw Soup with Papaya and Aloe Vera, Traditional Deep Fried Wrapped Chicken, Sliced Wok Seared Canadian Cod Fish with Preserved Vegetable and Wolfberry, Braised Ee Fu Noodles with Duo Mushrooms, Yellow Chives, Crab Meat and Shrimp Roe and Fried Rice with Seafood, Fried Garlic and Golden Dried Scallop. We ended the meal with an exquisite dessert – Chilled Osmanthus Jelly. This is part of Zuan Yuan Restaurant September promotion.
Upon finishing our meal, it’s time for us to sample the mooncakes. We were offered the Deep Fried Teo Chew Yam Paste with Single Yolk, White Lotus and Black Sesame Paste with Single Yolk, White Lotus Paste with Single Yolk and Tiramisu and Walnut from the baked mooncakes selection. While for snow skin mooncake was the Red Bean Paste with Pumpkin Seed, Durian Lotus Paste or the Green Tea Lotus Paste. For the health conscious, opt to try the Sugar Cane free selections such as Pandan Lotus Paste and White Lotus Paste with Mixed Nuts.
I preferred the Sugar Cane free selections especially the Pandan Lotus Paste, which tasted delicious. Apart from that the baked mooncakes selections of White Lotus and Black Sesame Paste with Single Yolk is a definitely ‘MUST TRY’ but just a note not everyone loves the taste of black sesame. I find the snow skin mooncake a tad too chewy again this differs for every individual’s preference is different.
Another thing I loved about mooncakes is the beautiful packaging and Zuan Yuan Restaurant’s packaging is very elegant and serves as an ideal gift. The mooncakes are available ala – carte or in sets of four baked skin and eight snow skin mooncakes. It is priced from RM13 nett onwards (Prices are inclusive of 10% service charge and 6% Goods and Services Tax.)
