A Journey Thru Putian Cuisine @ PUTIEN

Have any of you heard of PUTIEN, the famed restaurant that’s endorsed by Taiwanese actress Brigitte Lin and Hong Kong Celebrity and food critic Chua Lam? If not, let me share a quick humble story of PUTIEN origins. PUTIEN started out as a humble coffee shop in Singapore in 2000 by Mr. Fong Chi Chung who missed the food from his hometown PUTIAN. Thus, begins his journey to share authentic Putian Cuisine with the world. Now, PUTIEN has grown into an international brand with 24 branches in Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Shanghai & Taiwan.

From (L-R): Special Guest Actor John Tan, Ms.Caren Poon, General Manager of PUTIEN & Mr. Li Shunrong Executive Chef for PUTIEN

I’m delighted to be invited to their latest branch opening at SS15 Courtyard, Subang for a food tasting session featuring 10 of PUTIEN’s signature delicacies.  The event was graced by special guest John Tan who is an uprising actor of director Saw Teong Hin’s upcomng Hokkien movie, “You Mean The World To Me”. Each guest was treated to a sensory expedition featuring all 5 tastes- sweetness, sourness, bitterness, saltiness and umami (pleasant savoury taste) along with other sensors such as temperature, spiciness and texture.

Mr. Li Shunrong, Executive Chef for PUTIEN shared the in-depth knowledge on the ingredients from its cultivation to harvesting, transportation and preparation to ensure quality and freshness in their dishes.

Putian is well known for its many agricultural produce and seafood such as abalone, seaweed, bamboo clams as well as handcrafted products such as Yan Pi (Fujian-style wonton wrappers made of pork meat paste pounded by hand for 3 hours) and bee hoon made from hand-milled flour and sundried to ensure fine and silky noodles that’s not brittle. This truly reflect Putian or Heng Hwa cuisine which is characteristically light, flavourful with a strong emphasis on fresh ingredients. It is the PUTIEN’s philosophy to bring out the original taste of each ingredients hence its tagline ‘Fresh Ingredients, Original Taste’!
