Mizu Mochi Craze @ Minamotonoya Japanese Cafe

Nestled in the heart of the busy streets in Sri Petaling is the well known Minamotonoya Japanese Cafe which was the first cafe to introduce Mizu Mochi aka ‘water mochi’ dessert craze in Malaysia. I went there recently with my foodies kaki to check out their latest menu offering as well as trying out the famous Mizu Mochi 😀

Minamotonoya has recently moved to a new location within Sri Petaling and the decor is simplistic and rustic. Parking is a bit tough especially during the weekdays lunch hours. Thus, my advise is to go before the lunch crowd hits or comeback during dinner hours.

Passion Fruit Mojito RM15.90 & Lemon Mojito RM13.90
Passion Fruit Mojito RM15.90 & Lemon Mojito – RM13.90

Kick start with some refreshing drink quenchers while waiting for food to arrive. My personal favourite is the Passion Fruit Mojito.

Tori Karaage RM11.90
Tori Karaage – RM11.90

While enjoying our drinks, our appetiser arrived and its the Toki Karaage serve pipping hot and crispy. You can opt to dip it with chili or tomato sauce but even without it, tasted pretty yummy.

Shimeji Mushrooms Pesto Spaghetti RM15.90
Shimeji Mushrooms Pesto Spaghetti -RM15.90

I’ve always loved pesto spaghetti and the Shimeji Mushrooms Pesto Spaghetti did not disappoint. Al-dente spaghetti tossed with creamy pesto sauce with generous toppings of Shimeji mushroom and tomatoes comes highly-recommended.

Cheesy Pork Roll Spaghetti
Cheesy Pork Roll Spaghetti

If pesto is not to your liking, try the special Cheesy Pork Roll Spaghetti that’s filled with succulence pork wrapped in breaded crumbs and laden with with cheese. Topped with Shimeji Mushrooms and tomatoes as well. It tasted pretty good except it’s kinda watery.

Citrus Orange Salad with Flame Cheese RM14.90 (served with Wafu Yuzu or Goma Sauce)
Citrus Orange Salad with Flame Cheese -RM14.90 (served with Wafu Yuzu or Goma Sauce)

I’m sold just by looking at the beautifully plated salad. The Citrus Orange Salad with Flame Cheese is filled with awesome fresh greens , generous cheese sprinkles and slices of oranges. I tried both the sauces and prefer the Wafu Yuzu dressing as it alleviates the zesty taste of the orange , whilst the Goma sauce was equally good however a tad too rich. Just a tip, pour in the dressing bit by bit till it reach your desire taste.

Unagi Kabayaki Ochazuke RM19.90
Unagi Kabayaki Ochazuke- RM19.90

A classic dish the Unagi Kabayaki Ochazuke where the broth is served separately in a teapot. Just pour gently into the donburi to enjoy it.

When the rice is soaked with the broth, take a bite and you might be surprised by the interesting flavours. It’s not my favourite dish as I find it a bit too clumpy when it’s cold. However, this depends on individual preferences.

Chashu Don – RM19.90

I adored the Chashu Don for the chashu is well marinated and is extremely tender to chew on. Mixed in the delicious special in-house sauce with the rice and it’s absolutely divine. The dish is also served with a tamago. Highly recommended!

Egg with Jelly Furikake Don – RM14.90

Here’s another unique dish, the Egg with Jelly Furikake Don. You’ve got to mix the rice, egg and the jelly together. Wait for the jelly to melt for it’ll add a savoury flavour to the rice. Extremely delicious and comes highly recommended.

From Top – Bottom: Tofu Cheese Cake RM9.90, Orange Cheese Cake RM15.90 & Blueberry Cheese Cake RM15.90

Time for dessert and we tried three of the best selling cheese cake available. I tested each one individually and got to say this has to be the lightest cheesecake texture I’ve ever eaten in my life. With the right level of sweetness and just simply melts in my mouth.  I loved all of the cakes but the most unique would be the Tofu Cheese Cake.

Mizu Mochi – RM6.90 each

Finally, the Mizu Mochi arrived and it’s cuteness in abundance. The mochi is lightly sweeten and served with brown sugar on the side.  Loved this dessert and would highly recommend it.

It was certainly a good dining experience at Minamotonoya Japanese Cafe. From the new menu, I would highly recommend the Chansu Don, Egg with Jelly Furikake Don and Citrus Orange Salad with Flame Cheese. Next round, I shall bring my family to try it out for themselves.
