Today, I celebrated Merdeka in a nostalgic way by bringing my family to check out the #JomMalaysia Carnival at Sunway City. As a tribute to the national ‘Sayangi Malaysiaku’ National Day theme, the carnival aims to bring Malaysians from all walks of life to spend the National Day as one community!
The event was held in front of Sunway Resort Hotel and Spa, Sunway City from today till 1st September 2018. It was officially launched by Sunway EXCO Member, Puan Sri Datin Seri (Dr) Susan Cheah, along with Sunway Group Brand Marketing and Communiccations Senior General Manager, Jane Poh.
To kick off the festivities, a festive drum performance by students from Sunway University got the crowd roaring up. Next, we witness the trishaw ride flag-off before heading to tour around the five experiential spaces – the Flavours Of Malaysia (Food), Voices of Malaysia (Music), Cultures of Malaysia (Dance), Arts of Malaysia (Arts & Crafts), and Games of Malaysia (Games).
The most exciting part is exploring the mysterious “Evolution Tunnel” which was built within an existing rock tunnel. Inside, you’ll be marveled by the unique historical timeline which showcased Malaysia’s rich historical heritage alongside of Sunway’s transformation from its early mining days into a multinational conglomerate today.
Being a food enthusiast, nothing is more interesting than heading for the many stalls located at the Flavours of Malaysia. There we can enjoyed many local delights such as nasi kerabu, rojak, laksa, satay, cendols and many more. Apart from the stalls, there are several food trucks selling local delights available as well. For my kids, they were swarming around the “Childhood Food Store” to grab favorite retro snacks including White Rabbit Candy, Eye Glass Candy, Apollo Chocolate Wafers and many more. Honestly, I was pretty awed by it too as it’s been some time I’ve seen these snacks since my childhood days.
Another area that my kids loved was the Cultures of Malaysia stage, where the ASWARA Malaysia danced to the crowds. My kids were dancing along too! Enjoy the rich and melodic voices and passionate live performances by the Malaysian Buskers Club at the ‘Voices of Malaysia’ space.
For those who’re into some friendly competition games, check out the Traditional Malaysian Games section and have a go at nostalgic games like congkak, teng teng, lompat getah and many more. Retail therapy lovers should also not miss the Buatan Malaysia zone and treat themselves a wide selection of artisanal crafts and fashionable trinkets.
One of the most Instagram-worthy spot is definitely the Heritage Street. Take a step into our pre-independence architecture zone and start snapping away!
The carnival is still going on till 1st Sept from 10am – 10pm with many performances lined up. Take a look at the schedule below as well as the floor plan to ensure you visit all the areas ya 😀
It was certainly a fun-filled day for my family at #JomMalaysia Carnival today. For those who have yet to visit, swing by and join in to celebrate the festive together!
