Learning all about sustainability at Alam Flora Sustainability Hunt 2022!

The earth needs our help to protect it but most of us does not know the importance of sustainability neither take effort to learn about it. Mayhap we can learn from Alam Flora Sdn Bhd (Alam Flora), they have adopted a holistic approach towards sustainability which encompasses Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) aspects via programmes and initiatives involving waste diversion and waste recovery facilities.

Its Chief Operating Officer, Azahari Zainal Abidin, said Alam Flora is now on the right track to improving aspects of sustainable living and environmental care, in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Among them are adopting digital technology in its day-to-day operations, for example, by monitoring its operating vehicles to enable the provision of more efficient and effective services, and by reducing fuel waste which can reduce its carbon footprint.

Alam Flora has also developed an Integrated Recycling Facility (IRF) to reduce waste disposal at landfills and has been heavily promoting its 5R (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recovery) programmes in efforts to raise awareness among the public and help meet the Government’s goal of reducing recyclable waste sent to landfills to 40 percent by 2025.

Thanks to Alam Flora for organizing and inviting me to join the Sustainability Hunt 2022 at Taman Tugu, Kuala Lumpur. This hunt was participated by mainstream media, bloggers, KOLS and influencers.

Here’s my team members for the hunt (which include celebrity Ummi Nazeera)

At the hunt, we were given the task to complete 5 checkpoints which were all related to how we adopt a sustainable lifestyle can make a difference.

Trash Encyclopedia

Learn how to substitute items which are more sustainable (for example bringing your own water bottle instead of using plastic cups) and segregating trash the proper way.

Sustainability Champion

An interactive questionnaire where we learnt about the ways we emit carbon footprints and how we can reduce it. For example: energy usage, recycling habits, food selections and shopping practices.

The Tree’s Last Message

In the beautiful forest, we were informed that it’s marked for deforestation, so we penned our final last message in hopes of saving the trees!

This is fun as we learn how to Upcycle by transforming an old t-shirt into a bag which we could use to bring our things.

The Seed of Life

Learned how to plant microgreens by repurposing plastic containers. It is so easy to plant microgreens and if you’re not aware it contains higher nutrient levels then mature vegetables.

To reduce paper usage, Alam Flora used leaves to highlight our next check point!

It was definitely an eye opener to learn how a little change in our lifestyle can tremendously affect our environment! I’m grateful to be given the opportunity to learn about ways to protect our earth at the Sustainability Hunt 2022.
