Rampage starring Dwayne Johnson as primatologist Davis Okoye, a man who keeps people at a distance but shares an unshakable bond with George, the extraordinarily intelligent, incredibly rare albino silverback gorilla who has been in his care since he rescued the young orphan from poachers. But a rogue genetic experiment gone awry mutates this gentle ape into a raging creature of enormous size.
From here the movie plot is easy to follow and you won’t need to put on your scientist hat. The movie plot is quite fast pace as we need to save the world from major destruction. Here, we follow Johnson on his quest to save his friend George. Along the way, we met geneticist Kate Caldwell (Naomie Harris), who knows what’s happening to George.
Apparently, Kate is the scientist trying out breakthrough new technology, known as CRISPR that gave scientists a path to treat incurable diseases through genetic editing. Why was she playing with mother nature? Simple, she was trying to save her only brother from death. However, what she failed to realized was the company she’s working with had other plans with her potion. When Kate found out, she was framed and put to jail.
Together with Johnson they race against time to secure an antidote to save George and halt a global catastrophe from happening. They also bonded with a Federal Government Agent who loves to talk like a cowboy. There were some manly rivalry going on and it was quite hilarious to watch. Got to say, the agent stood out and shine in this character 😀
Wait a minute…was George the only altered animal in Rampage? Of course not, there’s two more animals such as a 30 foot tall wolf and a huge gigantic crocodile! I was truly impress with the details they put in these altered animals. The CGI was pretty good, in fact in some scenes the animals seems so real. Did I also mention, the scriptwriter also taught us a few things about animal’s normal behavior kinda similar to ‘National Geography’.
Anyway, from the moment the altered animals were introduced we head straight for full action. Run, dodge and trying to stay alive whilst battling against the gigantic animals. We watched in awe whenever the animals appeared. There are some touching scenes like the part where George die and Johnson cried. Only to realize George was faking his own death. That scene was extremely funny . As this is a feel good movie, needless to say our hero Johnson and his team did save the world and George.
Watch Rampage if you’re looking for purely entertainment and have a kick of watching gigantic animals running loose in the city. There’s truly nothing interesting about the story line. Johnson as usual managed to keep the movie floating with his charisma and comical expression. Apart from that, the rest of the characters didn’t really shine except for the cowboy Federal Government agent. I do note that certain scenes, we’ve got a touch of emotional element and I wished there were more of this scenes.
