(Movie Review) Zoolander 2

Zoolander was one of my favourite silly movies back in the days and 15 years later it’s back!

Ben Stiller plays Derek Zoolander and Owen Wilson plays Hansel in Zoolander No. 2 from Paramount Pictures.

The movie kick off with former models Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) and Hansel (Owen Wilson) find themselves back into the spotlight after retiring from the industry. Invited to model for a major fashion house in Rome, both of them are surprised to see how much the industry has changed. To top it off, beautiful celebrity pop stars are being murdered around the world and they always ended dead with the ‘Blue Steel’ look. This prompts special Interpol agent (from the fashion division) Valentina Valencia (Penelope Cruz) to seek help from Derek. It’s now up to Derek and Hansel to help save the world’s most beautiful people from a similar fate.

This was one of the most no brainer show that I was truly excited to watch as back then it provides a lot of silly jokes for us to laughed about. Reprising his role as Derek Zoolander, Ben Stiller was still funny to watch and one can’t help be amazed by his stoned expression throughout the movie. Hansel, played by Owen Wilson was a great sport providing the necessary logical thoughts against the idiocy of Derek. Whilst, Penelope Cruz who plays Valentina Valencia hold against her own as a smart/awestruck fan of Derek. Will Ferrell reprises his role as the mean and villainous Mugatu.

To compare against the original movie, this sequel truly falls short of my expectations. In the first, 20 minutes there was laughter ringing about in the cinema as audiences watched Justin Bieber doing the infamous ‘Blue Steel’ look before he dies. Gradually, the movie move on to slapstick jokes and to a certain extent nothing makes sense. Some scenes that’s meant for laughter just seem a tad too flat and at time the jokes are purely x-rated. However, there are some funny scenes that still got me rolling in tears. The saving grace of this movie is probably the special appearances of notable celebrities and fashion icon (hints: Sting, Anna Wintour, Billy Zane and lots more) so do keep a lookout for them.

My verdict is to watch this if you’re a fan of Zoolander and loved silly comedy film. Zoolander is now open in cinemas nationwide, feel free to share your thoughts/comments if you’ve watched the film.
